Parenting in the Present

by Randy Schroeder

I think Jesus would have been an amazing parent.

One of the reasons I say that is because Jesus was totally free to live in the present. This means He was not bound up with bitterness, resentment, and anger about the past or fear, anxiety, and worry about the future. Being free to live in the present means being free to fully love.

Our children are not getting a fully healthy parent if we are bound up in the past or the future.

When I started parenting I was not free to live in the present. It took some time and hard work to break free of the past and to trust God with the future.

Next time you are with your family, let me encourage you to take note of if you are fully present, fully engaged, relaxed, and caringly involved in what you family is doing. Be aware if you find yourself easily angered or feeling anxious. That can be an indicator that you have some past/future issues that need to be looked at in more detail.

As parents, it's important to work on healing and forgiving those people from the past. And ask God to bless you with more of His perfect love, which casts out fear (I John 4:18). Tell Him that you trust Him with the future, especially with your kids lives, which can be a big part of your fear of the future. Enjoy God and your family in the present.
